Disrupting precedent, residents will have an experience that is incongruous with traditional low-income housing. Instead of confronting the housing crisis with minimum standards, settling for discounted over dignified, HSCD is building dwellings with sunset balconies and granite countertops. Although many landlords refuse neighbors with vouchers, we are prioritizing the demographic. As gentrification in the City Centre accelerates, we believe Asheville’s contested identity hangs in the balance without more affordable housing downtown.

We are creating an atmosphere that speaks of individual worth, creating homes, not just housing.  Potential tenants include service industry workers, 3rd shift laborers, formerly unhoused residents, and families struggling to make ends meet. The development is deed restricted at 100% affordable in perpetuity. Convinced that housing at its best is a pathway to community, the West Haywood Street apartments will offer an environment where connections can be made and friendships can grow.
